This Chair will explore how hierarchies of tiny structures in polymer surfaces can be designed to assemble themselves to create practical applications advancing medical and marine sciences. It will enable Walker to lead NSERC's Strategic Network for Bioplasmonic Systems (BiopSys) to develop devices that accelerate the diagnosis of lung cancer and leukemia, and improve prognosis. It will unite 20 Canadian faculty and provide training to 60 students. The applicant will also develop novel polymer nanomaterials as non-toxic coatings for aquaculture cage nets and photovoltaic devices. Such nanotechnology research is of benefit to Canada and integral to U of T's Strategic Research Plan.
