英文摘要
Research on new materials and devices with novel functionalities has been supporting the rapid economic growth of Canada and technological innovations in industries, such as semiconductor, in the last several decades. Two-dimensional (2D) crystal materials present a broad playground, where the interface effects and nanoscale confinements often lead to substantial modifications in their electronic and magnetic ground states. Notable examples of these 2D materials include graphene and transition metal chalcogenides (TMCs) such as topological insulators Bi2Se3. ******The proposed research program capitalizes on such high tunability of their properties of the 2D materials and their great potential for functional devices, with the goal of designing, inducing, and controlling new states in TMCs, perovskite oxides, and other novel 2D materials systems. Achieving materials systems that permit experimental realization of the emergent properties and support next-generation of electronic devices lies at the heart of this proposal. ******This program will unprecedentedly integrate molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) synthesis with nanostructure fabrication, and a wide range of characterization techniques to explore and control the emergent properties in new materials. This kind of integrated research capabilities is extremely rare in other institutes in Canada and internationally, due to the limit of research infrastructures. At UBC, we aim to build a world-leading research program that allows us to routinely design and study nanostructured materials with new forms of properties. The main equipment to conduct the proposed research is an integrated cluster system consisting of an oxide MBE, a TMC MBE, and an angel-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES). This state-of-the-art infrastructure will be the first of such at UBC, with less than five existing over the world, and give us unique capability to expand the research areas and to help Canada to lead in the development of cutting-edge materials.******Stewart Blusson Quantum Matter Institute of UBC provides a platform for exciting interdisciplinary collaboration opportunities in condensed matter physics, nanoscience, and materials science for students at both the graduate and undergraduate levels and for post-doctorate fellows. Through the collaborations, they will be exposed to the state-of-the-art infrastructures and conduct forefront research. Highly qualified personnel (HQP) will gain not only the required knowledge and skills as an independent researcher, but also a better understanding of how a research program as such helps to shape our daily life through scientific and technological innovations. These qualities will prepare them to pursue and guarantee them a successful career in academia and in industries, with their leadership vision at a global level.
