In this grant application, we propose to develop effective techniques to eliminate emerging pollutants including compounds which are endocrine disruptors. We will continue the development of aggregated enzymes especially combi-CLEAs which include two or more enzymes. The work proposed will use enzymes agglomerated as CLEA's in novel reactors which will include membrane bioreactors. The CLEAs will initially be of single enzymes such as laccase. The CLEAs for the membrane bioreactor will be CLEA's of more than one enzyme. These combi-CLEAs will allow the treatments of real wastewater where temperature, pH, and the presence of other compounds would otherwise make the enzymes either ineffective or at least force them to operate in less than optimal conditions. Target compounds for treatment will include bisphenol A, triclosan and nonylphenol. The membrane bioreactor should be able to operate at high flow rates, low pollutant concentrations with little loss of enzymes. This project will have as its outcome effective treatment for phenolic compounds using enzymes. Moreover the treatment will be practicable in the sense that it will be possible to undertake such treatment at a reasonable cost.
