英文摘要
Polymer nanocomposites are the most encouraging and promising materials from the last decades, consequently gained much attention due to their unique characteristics of enhancing the mechanical and barrier properties of many composite materials. Hybrid bio-based composites exploiting the synergy between biomass nanofibers (NAF) in a nano-reinforced bio-based polymer can lead to improved properties and maintain environmental appeal. Quebec and Canada possess huge non-exploited biomass and agriculture-based residues which can extensively be utilized as a potential resource of materials for this sector of industry. Several chemical treatments to extract the natural fibers and modify their surfaces are being made to enhance the adhesion or interfacial bonding between polymers and the extracted fibers. However, these treatments often use harmful and environmentally non-friendly approaches to both environment and human health. The proposed project aims at developing a green and integrated process for effective and economical extraction and modification of fibers from flax stems using techniques disorganizing the biomass structure with green fluids such as the supercritical and liquefied CO2 combined with highly selective enzymatic hydrolysis towards the release of nanofibers and other short and medium fibres that will be used to produce composites and bio-nanocomposites reinforcements, after enzymatic functionalization of their surfaces to render them compatible with polymeric matrices. The research results of this project may have a tangible impact for the participating industrial partners who can see in this project an opportunity to consolidate their position in their sectors of interests for the formulation of innovative products. The benefits are tangible for Quebec and Canadian economical development through the valorisation of agricultural products, rural regions development and new jobs creation.
