The fast growing discoveries in nanoparticle research have offered uncountable opportunities for innovative technological applications. The proposed research program is aimed at understanding the effects of confinement on reactions - reactions that would not otherwise occur naturally in the bulk. We propose to predict novel properties of nanomaterials under confinement and tailor these properties for high technology and high impact nanoscale devices, such as (1) improved catalytic activities of heterogeneous and asymmetric reactions, (2) improved efficiency of support-less catalysts in aqueous environment for fuel cell applications, (3) optimized light-sensitive optimized photosynthesis devices.
