Peatland represent a globally significant stock of carbon and sources of greenhouse gases (GHG) including methane (CH4). Ongoing disturbance of peatlands alters ecosystem function and could lead to loss of soil carbon stocks and altered rates of GHG fluxes resulting in significant climate impacts. The proposed research program will investigate the interaction of peatlands and climate focusing on: 1) the impact of climate change on peatland ecosystem function, 2) GHG exchange from managed peatlands, and 3) the role of free-phase gas (bubbles) on managed peatland CH4 emission. Results from this research program will improve peatland management in a changing climate. Quantification of managed peatland GHG fluxes is needed for national inventory reports and can be used for development of mitigation strategies.
