Aquatic systems have suffered intense human usage with devastating consequences for water quality and fish biodiversity. Decreased dissolved oxygen, or hypoxia, is one serious manifestation of anthropogenic stress to fresh and coastal waters, driven by influx of wastes and fertilizers that accelerates eutrophication. My research integrates morphology and physiology of fishes with their ecology and evolution to understand effects of environmental stressors on fishes. Results of this program will provide new insights into the importance of short-term and long-term response to hypoxic stress, and the interaction of hypoxia with two other pervasive aquatic stressors: global warming and water turbidity.
