The digitalization of manufacturing is progressing at a rapid pace and will likely have transformative impact on economy and society within the next decade. However, built around conventional materials and manufacturing processes, existing design software cannot take full advantage of the design complexity that 3D printing and other digital manufacturing technologies enable. The goal of this research is to develop the theoretical and algorithmic foundations of next-generation design software that leverages data and computation to exploit digital manufacturing processes to their fullest.
