Metamaterials is an emerging field offering great opportunities for discovering new physical phenomena and exploiting them in groundbreaking applications. They are artificially structured media with unusual electromagnetic properties, such as a negative-index-of-refraction. The scientific excitement surrounding metamaterials is captured by asking the crucial question: What would be possible if we were able to synthesize materials with user-defined electromagnetic properties? We are proposing a world-class program to address this question and develop the next generation of metamaterials for applications including sub-diffraction imaging, multifunctional antennas & microwave devices for telecommunications, wireless power transfer, medical imaging & therapeutics, defence, light harnessing & processing.
