Canada Research Chair in Ocean Mapping

The ocean contributes significantly to Canada's economy, yet < 10% has been adequately mapped and 1/3 of species remain unknown to science. Hence, information needed for the sustainable development of Canadas ocean resources remains lacking. This research program will focus on mapping the spatial complexity of the ocean from the seafloor to the surface. The integrated picture created will enable monitoring of changes in ecosystem health. This program will combine conventional approaches, but also examine the use of autonomous vehicles in coastal and northern regions in order to understand the relationships between habitats, resources, human activities and changing conditions.
