This research program seeks to characterize geohazards across the northern Cascadia subduction zone and fore-arc. A new wave of spaceborne and airborne sensors are transforming our ability to map surface deformation and topography associated with earthquake faulting, enabling the rupture extents of future subduction events to be assessed and shallow, upper plate faulting to be identified. The project is motivated by a recent global surge in megathrust events (e.g. the 2011 Tohoku, Japan, earthquake and tsunami) and complex upper plate ruptures (e.g. the 2016 Kaikoura, NZ, earthquake) which are rapidly overturning previous consensus on subduction zone behaviour.
