Current rates of brain injury in Canada is greater than all breast cancers, multiple sclerosis, HIV/AIDs and spinal cord injuries combined. Among brain-injury cases, trauma-induced brain injury (TBI) is the second highest neurological condition, next to Alzheimers disease and other dementias. Further, TBI in early life significantly increases risks of dementia in later life. Dr. Maos research is focused on understanding intracranial mechanics and underlying mechanisms of brain injury. Establishing sophisticated numerical schemes to understand how the external energy, from single or multiple impacts, is deposited into brain cells/axons/vessels, will enable the development of protections to reduce harmful intracranial energy.
