Light Distance And Ranging, or lidar, is an active remote sensing technology. The lidar system emits laser pulses and measures the time until the reflected light is detected. Distance from the system can then be calculated using the speed of light. The resulting data is represented as a 3D point cloud. Lidar has many applications in forestry because some of the laser pulses reach through the canopy to the ground, or are reflected back by parts of the forest canopy. This enables the creation of both detailed surface or terrain models, and detailed models of trees and shrubs in the forest itself from a single survey. Accurate and compact lidar systems can be flown on relatively inexpensive remotely piloted aerial systems (RPAS - also known as drones), enabling organizations to collect their own aerial lidar as needed. Selkirk College is requesting a Green Valley International LiAir S220 and related software. The LiAir 220 can be used with our existing DJI M600 Pro hexacopter to collect data in support of applied research projects we are conducting in partnership with small RPAS companies and their clients in the forest industry.
