Aquaculture now provides over 50% of the annual fish consumption globally, but fish are cold-blooded and thus the ability of their immune systems to resist disease is affected by the environmental temperature fluctuations and long-term increases that climate change will bring. Dr. Dixons laboratory will develop and use state-of-the-art immunoassays and cell biology techniques to determine the immune status of fish to help develop next-generation vaccines that will provide disease protection. The knowledge and diagnostic assays developed during this CRC chair project will prevent disease losses, saving billions of dollars and providing a stable food source for the worlds population.
