The research program proposed by Dr. Robert Pelton, for the renewal of his Tier 1 CRC in Interfacial Technologies will build and execute a new collaborative, multi-disciplinary initiative called Fibres-for-Farmers. The vision is to develop new agricultural applications for high value-added materials based on superior Canadian northern softwood pulp fibres. For example, thin cellulosic membranes covering soil could inhibit weeds, reduce moisture loss and deliver nutrients. Similarly, cellulosic foams could replace thousands of hectares of unrecyclable rockwool in greenhouses. Fibres-for-Farmers will break down the scientific and technological barriers that currently prevent these new opportunities for Canadian forest products.
