Dr. Zhus research is in the area of macromolecular reaction engineering of controlled radical polymerization. It focuses on the precise design and control of chain microstructure for innovative polymer products and applications. His objectives include: achieving high monomer conversions in advanced polymer production resulting in significant energy cost savings for industry as well as reduction of volatile organic compounds for environmental protection; development of smart polymers to facilitate extraction of pharmaceutical ingredients from biomasses for safe drugs; and novel surface modification methods for polymer composites containing metal-organic frameworks for use in gas separation and storage.
