Smart cities require advanced electric distribution grids that respond to stringent requirements and provide a secure and sustainable electric supply for the information and communication infrastructure and other critical loads. They can integrate clean and renewable local energy sources and should manage loads to maximize generation and distribution infrastructure utilization. The grid should be efficient, reliable and resilient to extreme events. The research program proposes to apply the microgrid concept for the deployment of the advanced electric grid, and develop microgrid controllers to manage the assets and the control and communication infrastructure to achieve a flexible and resilient electric grid.
