The proposed research program centres on developing and using synchrotron X-ray methods to answer fundamental questions on the roles of elements in the chemical, life and environmental sciences. Specific research studies target the roles that essential elements play in living systems, including diseases in which those essential elements lack normal control, such as Alzheimers disease. Toxic heavy elements also will be studied, including their molecular mechanisms and methods to counter their toxicity. Additionally, the sulfur chemistry of fossil fuels will be explored through new synchrotron X-ray methods. The proposed work has impacts for world health, environmental sciences and life sciences.
