Microbes not only exist ubiquitously in the environment but also live within us human beings. They are not silently sitting in the audience but enthusiastic game players that work together to modulate macroscale functions from nitrogen fixation and biodegradation to human health. This research investigates the competitive interactions among microbes focusing on how bacteria gain resistance to antibiotics, natural microbial weapons that we have harnessed for decades, and alternative weapons bacteria employ to kill other bacteria. This research will generate important mechanistic insights regarding microbial competition and novel strategies as antibiotic alternatives to control antimicrobial resistance.
