Understanding how stars form is one of the most important unsolved problems in modern-day astronomy. The Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA), a powerful new radio telescope, is revolutionizing our view of the universe. I will use ALMA to determine what causes the large variations in the rate of star formation from one galaxy to another by carrying out a pioneering and comprehensive survey of astrochemical tracers in nearby galaxies. Specific goals include determining how dense gas fraction and ultraviolet heating affect the star formation process and calibrating new techniques for studying young distant galaxies in the early universe.
