Billions of people worldwide use the Internet for all manner of transactions, but it was never designed with security or privacy in mind. Therefore much Internet communication and metadata (such as identities) are unnecessarily exposed not only to third parties, but also to the communicating parties themselves.The most popular metadata-protecting privacy enhancing technologies (PETs) today support millions of daily users, but have fundamental design shortcomings that prevent them from significantly growing. This research program will close this gap by constructing innovative PETs that can be used by far more people than currently possible, to protect communication contents and metadata.
