Atoms and molecules can be used as extremely precise tools to unravel deeper physics questions. In this program, the nominee will develop portable atomic clocks, with potential applications in metrology, geodesy and satellite navigation. These clocks could also open up a new way to "see" massive dynamical objects in space, using gravitational waves. As well, the nominee will use confined molecular ions to precisely measure rotation frequencies of molecules, which will shed light on molecular physics and chemistry in space. Techniques will be developed to obtain part-per-trillion precision in frequency measurements, which will impact the development of terahertz communications technology.
