项目摘要
Energy innovation is critical to our future. With the limitations of current technology to convert our natural resources to marketable energy supplies while ensuring a cleaner environment, there is a dire need to continue developing cutting-edge technologies for increasingly efficient and responsible utilization of unconventional hydrocarbon sources. Coordinated strategic investments in energy research programs and innovation systems will sustain and bolster Canada's position as a world leader in pioneering research and the responsible development of conventional and unconventional energy production.
Energi Simulation, resource industry companies and the University of Alberta have joined forces to develop a NSERC Collaborative Research and Development (CRD) program that will apply soil and rock mechanics principles to reservoir geomechanical characterization at multiple scales for unconventional resources. The research program will also pursue reservoir geomechanical modelling and production optimization that will advance our fundamental knowledge in these areas and allow us to develop novel technologies and processes for economic and environmentally sustainable recovery of unconventional resources. The present application represents the second phase of an ongoing collaborative research and development program with many of our first phase industrial partners.
If Canada is to find and develop the next generation of energy reserves and manage the environmental challenges it poses, it must first find and develop the next generation of energy industry leaders-leaders who will take educated and informed risks, build companies, pursue a vision and, in the process, find and produce the energy to fuel the world. This NSERC CRD program, supported by the state-of-the-art GeoInnovation Environments, will create an innovative, exciting research environment for graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, research engineers and junior and senior research professors to train the next generation of leaders.
