The flow properties of Froth Treatment Tailings (essentially the remains in the fields after bitumen extraction) will be studied at a fundamental level as a function of composition (diluent, solids content), pressure, and temperature, essentially at conditions relevant to industrial process. Models will be derived from the experimental work that can be used for an efficient handling of FTT to solve the environmental concerns i.e. negative public criticism due to enormous tailings impoundment volumes left in the field and equal surface areas requiring reclamation of habitat for wildlife. Essentially the ultimate objective of this program is to develop ways of a complete reclamation of the affected areas from bitumen extraction.
