CharTech Solutions (CT) is a Toronto-based cleantech developer of innovative technological solutions toenvironmental problems such as water quality, and waste reduction. Their process creates their primary productbiocoal (BC), which is made by transforming wood waste, such as construction and demolition waste destinedfor landfill, into a lower greenhouse gas (GHG) emitting coal substitute for industrial manufacturing. Due tothe need for the physical and chemical properties offered by coal in certain manufacturing processes, such assteelmaking, lower GHG emitting options are limited. The use of BC as an alternative to coal in manufacturingis new, but incredibly promising for GHG reductions. Additionally, one of the waste products from theproduction of BC is a gas that can be upgraded into renewable natural gas (RNG) for grid use, further reducingemissions. BC could help many industries reduce GHGs and increase competitiveness in a low carboneconomy, but to be able to scale the BC market, CT needs to be able to model scalable potential GHGemissions reductions for each potential client and their BC needs. Mohawk College's Centre for ClimateChange Management (CCCM) has GHG modelling and quantification expertise to support CT creating ascalable process, which will help them efficiently quantify environmental benefits to clients and improve theclient recruitment. The current opportunity for CT to collaborate alongside the CCCM in the development of asoftware model to test and understand emissions reductions associated with CT's BC process, supply chain, andthe capture and creation of RNG. This exciting partnership will support the understanding of alternative energyemissions mitigation and process optimization by using a model created at Mohawk College to drive strategicdecision making in an Ontario-based business. The scalable model created will help CT to develop use casesfor other potential clients across Canada.
