Warming climate, changing extremes of flooding and drought, and increased food production for a growing population are placing freshwater resources under unprecedented levels of stress. Technological advances, new paradigms in water management, and increased awareness of threats to global water security will all be essential to future sustainability. This research will address these challenges by developing new methods using satellite hydrological measurements, and by developing next-generation computer models that can utilize them, to track how freshwater availability is changing around the world. This work will also have important implications for food and energy security, water policy, and transboundary water issues.
