Forensic Thanatology involves the study of death and the biochemical changes occurring postmortem. The research will determine how the unique Canadian environment affects the rate of decomposition and the trace evidence that survives. The Chair will investigate biochemical markers that are: released into the air and used by cadaver dogs to locate human remains; and released into the tissue or surrounds and could be used to estimate time since death. This knowledge will improve the effectiveness of death investigations in Canada and abroad involving the search and recovery of missing persons, and victims of homicide, mass disasters or war crimes.
