Arctic and Subarctic regions are Canada’s new frontiers of discovery and opportunity. In the context of accelerating climate change and socioeconomic development, Sentinel North will develop and deploy innovative optics-photonics technologies (glassy materials, imaging systems, spectroscopy, remote sensors) to sense, in situ and over time, critical variables of the coupled human-environment system. This trans-sector initiative aims to understand how ongoing changes affect ecosystem services, infrastructure, and cardiometabolic and brain health. Sentinel North will build Canada’s capacity to monitor the transformation of the North at all scales, from microbiota to ecosystems, towards new diagnostic models and intervention strategies for sustainable development and health.
