Rheology is the study of flow and deformation, and specifically of gooey, sticky, elastic liquids. Household examples include melted plastics used to shape products, molten cheese atop pizza or French onion soup, and even unhealthy discharges from noses. These systems have interesting flow properties because they consist of long chain molecules, chains that align when they flow. Starting with simple models of these chains, Giacomin¿s group calculates their flow behaviors and then explores the role that these behaviors play in plastics manufacturing.
