Metabolism is the processing of chemicals by cells and organisms to maintain life. Mitochondria are central to the energy requiring processes of animal cells. This research will integrate how ¿large scale¿ environmental factors outside an animal impact processes on the inside at the mitochondrial level. In turn responses at the ¿small scale¿ metabolic level may limit the whole animal responses to challenge and their ability to survive and adapt. New insight will be gained on a broad range of issues we are currently facing, including the susceptibility of animals to environmental stressors and how diet influences an individual¿s metabolism, growth and development.
