The Canada Research Chair program in Aquatic Ecosystem Studies is focused on how northern freshwater and coastal marine ecosystems are responding to environmental change, with the aim to generate a predictive understanding of future change and to guide monitoring and management strategies for these high latitude waters. Microscopic life underpins the biological production, food web processes, nutrient fluxes and biodiversity of these ecosystems, and the chair research program places emphasis on an improved understanding of this microbial world in lakes, wetlands, streams and fjords. This research directly addresses Canada¿s environmental needs and international responsibilities in polar research and reporting.
