Dr. Eliasmith's research is focused on building a mathematical theory of how the brain works. He is developing a general method for building neurally-based cognitive systems that can be directly compared to many kinds of neuroscientific data, from brain imaging to single cell recording. Large-scale simulations using his approach have helped better characterize both normal cognitive function and the behaviour of diseased or damaged brains. Understanding poor functioning can help develop methods for improving patient outcomes, while understanding normal function can help us reproduce skilled human performance in artificial systems.
