Human activities are profoundly and rapidly altering biodiversity across the globe. As Canada Research Chair in Plant Functional Biodiversity, Etienne Laliberté and his research team will develop trait-based approaches to better understand and predict changes in plant biodiversity and their consequences for ecosystem functioning. To achieve this, they will use ¿and extend¿ an emerging, paradigm-shifting approach in biodiversity science: ¿spectranomics¿. By unravelling the links between plant phylogeny, functional traits, and foliar spectral-optical properties, this research will shed new light on the causes and consequences of changing plant biodiversity, and will pave the way for a future global biodiversity observatory.
