This research program aims to understand the interactions between multi-scale flow structures in the ocean circulation, as well as small-scale ocean turbulence that ultimately dissipates the circulation¿s energy and drives irreversible mixing. Innovation is achieved by employing state of the art ocean observing technology, specifically submersible, drone-like platforms equipped with turbulence-sensing instrumentation, to make highly-resolved, long-duration, multi-scale observations of the ocean state. Understanding these processes is central to our understanding of how the oceans work, and also critical to the improvement of ocean models which cannot explicitly resolve all of the relevant scales and their physics.
