As advances in machine learning and artificial intelligence are transforming many branches of industry they critically depend on computer systems that are able to efficiently and reliably process and store large amounts of data. The proposed research program will collect and analyse large amounts of field data from these systems and use the results towards two objectives: (1) Improving the reliability of data storage systems, including both enterprise storage systems and distributed storage in virtualized data centres. (2) More efficient use of resources in virtualized data centres through novel virtual machine types and improved scheduling of virtual machine workloads.
