Polar oceans play a crucial role in mitigating climate change. However, fundamental questions remain on how these regions will respond to climate change. Answering these questions is key to improve our ability to project climate change and to prepare suitable adaptation strategies for society. I propose to lead an ambitious research program that will advance our understanding of polar ocean circulation, carbon cycle and cryosphere. Beyond deepening our knowledge of the role of polar oceans in the climate system, the proposed research will provide important guidance for the development of the next generation of ocean models and observational networks.
