Despite rapid development of genomic technologies, relatively little progress has been made in understanding how DNA controls trait expression in farm animals. The ultimate goal of Dr. Baes¿ research is to understand the genomic architecture of quantitative traits in livestock. In doing so, she aims to improve health, welfare, and efficiency of farm animals using genetic and genomic technologies, and to uncover the relationship between phenotype and genotype. Understanding how desirable and undesirable traits are controlled at the DNA level will accelerate breeding of healthy, disease-resistant animals by several orders of magnitude.
