Mine closure and reclamation should be designed from the beginning of mining projectsto reduce environmental impacts associated with mining operations. However, there is often minimal interaction between disciplines involved in mine planning and environmental management, and an optimal design is often not achieved. The main objective of the research program is to integrate environmentaldecisions during the mine life cycle for an optimized management of mine waste. The research results will provide tools to integrate mine waste managementfrom exploration (theme 1), operations (theme 2), to post-closure (theme 3) that will benefit the Canadian population and its mining industry.
