Radiation therapy is used to treat over half of all cancer patients. Designing a personalized treatment that targets the patient¿s tumour while sparing healthy organs can take substantial effort. The goal of this proposal is to develop fundamentally new optimization methods that can be applied to help automate the treatment planning process. Prof. Chan¿s approach will ensure personalization, robustness and clinical deliverability of the resulting treatments. Automation will support the scalable design and delivery of cancer therapy, which is needed to satisfy the growing worldwide demand for therapeutic radiation.
