Around the world, there is a growing awareness to protect the urban environment; hence, urban mining of end-of-life products utilizing green processes have become imperative. The proposed Canada Research Chair will develop and apply innovations in urban mining of strategic materials, namely lithium, cobalt, and rare earth elements (REEs) from postconsumer products, utilizing an innovative and environmentally friendly process called supercritical fluid extraction (SCFE). Carrying out this research involves process-critical goals of investigating the phase equilibrium; elucidating the mechanism; and developing and optimizing the SCFE process.
