Infrastructure design and management across Canada is an important component of the sustainable development of communities, particularly in Indigenous communities. The state of infrastructure (e.g. wastewater, solid waste) in Indigenous communities is dire: ageing, obsolete, inadequate or non-existent. While the issues are inherently technical, this research program considers that solutions must integrate social, economic and environmental concerns, in addition to Indigenous experience and perspective. The objective of this Canada Research Chair is to advance integrated knowledge systems in order to effectively address the infrastructure challenges in Indigenous communities. Novel insights into community-led approaches will better inform infrastructure engineering in Canada.
