Soil carbon is vitally important to the fertility of soils and to the long-term sustainability of ecosystems and the important services that they provide. Increasing temperatures and deposition of nitrogen to forests is shifting the biogeochemical cycling of soil carbon and fundamentally changing ecosystem function. The proposed research program will use highly advanced analytical tools to elucidate how long-term soil warming and increased nitrogen are impacting forests over time. This highly defined, molecular-level information will explain how these processes are transformed. This knowledge will be used to develop informed policies to protect these precious ecosystems.
