Customized nanoparticles have unique properties and are needed in many technologies, for example, in drug delivery, renewable energy production, miniature gas sensors and high capacity batteries. At a time when novel technologies using nanoparticles are rapidly changing, the manufacturing of new nanoparticles with desired properties is lagging behind. This research program develops computer-based modeling tools to expedite the design of cost-effective, scalable and environmentally friendly processes for manufacturing unique nanoparticles with controlled properties. Such computer-based tools significantly reduce the development cost and time by using advanced algorithms and recent scientific discoveries in combustion, aerosol and material science.
