英文摘要
The electrical power system is undergoing a paradigm shift from the conventional power grid towards a modern grid wherein a plethora of renewable energy sources (RESs) and distributed energy resources (DERs), e.g., wind and photovoltaic (PV) systems, along with communication and monitoring systems (synchrophasor networks) are present. The motivating factors behind this compelling shift include (1) mitigating greenhouse gas emissions, (2) addressing ever-increasing energy consumption, (3) reducing power losses over long transmission lines, and (4) reducing the dependence on the oil industry. Nevertheless, due to the intermittent nature of RES, lack of sufficiently mature energy storage technology, increased diversification of generation portfolios with inhomogenous resources and technologies, and vulnerability of synchrophasor networks to communication impairments - e.g., data loss, cyber-attacks - the realization of such smart grids has to overcome a number of major technical challenges associated with safety, stability, system reliability, grid resiliency, and optimal power management of DERs. The proposed research program will develop an enhanced synchrophasor-assisted control framework to enable the future grid to overcome the aforementioned challenges. The proposed framework includes (1) advanced DER control systems at primary level, (2) a synchrophasor network including phasor measurement unit (PMU) data processing schemes and secondary level control, and (3) a cosimulation test-bed for performance evaluation. I will devise novel controllers for DERs to overcome the inevitable and subtle challenges associated with real-life power grids. The synchrophasor network transmits measured synchrophasor data to phasor data concentrators, where datasets are processed to enhance their integrity and quality. At the secondary control layer, the processed data are used to calculate the control commands for optimal coordination of DERs. The cosimulation platform provides multi-formalism operational integration of power system components, synchrophasor network and DER controllers. This research program leads to advanced robust controllers and reliable synchrophasor networks to enable unprecedented levels of integration of DERs into the grid. The developed controllers combined with synchrophasor data processing algorithms will improve power quality, energy efficiency, reliability, resiliency, and sustainability of modern power grids. The outcomes of the proposed research program can significantly decrease the duration of service interruptions and power outages that jeopardize the supply security and currently cost over $140 billion annually in North America. Moreover, the proposed research program will equip Canadian industries with novel ideas to advance the technological frontiers. It will also promote the dissemination of impactful research with novel ideas, and empower Canadian HQP to become influential leaders in the field of power and energy.
