Critical Clean Water Technologies for Earth System Biogeochemical Research

The ultrapure water purification technologies requested here are an essential foundation to modern biogeochemical research across a wide range of Earth Science fields. These clean water technologies will specifically support ten research groups hosted in the UBC Earth Sciences (ES) building. These groups have a critical requirement for clean water and conduct research across a variety of fields including chemical, biological and physical oceanography, hydrology, paleoclimate, marine geochemistry, groundwater contamination, virology, and drug discovery. Given the large number of users and variety of needs, we require two high performance, high flow systems to support the needs of all groups. The new ultrapure water purification technologies will replace two existing, 20-year old systems that are the sole source of purified water in the ES building, and are thus critical to the research activities of these ten research groups, whom together have supported over 193 HQP during the past six years. In addition, these essential ultrapure water purification technologies will support the departmental teaching laboratories and field schools in oceanography, hydrogeology, and groundwater hydrology.
