This research program ensures continuity with successful past partnership projects including community climate change adaption work funded by the Federation of Canadian Municipalities, the Columbia Basin Climate Source web application funded by the Columbia Basin Trust, wildfire fuel remote-sensing analysis funded by NSERC and new technology and climate event adaptation in the forestry, hydro-power and mining sectors funded by industry fee-for-service. While the economic, climate action, social innovation, and evidence-based decision-making aspects of Selkirk Innovates' research program are well-developed, the health, reconciliation and inclusion themes have been emerging. NSERC funding through Mobilize and CCSIF streams will be key to ensuring these areas continue to mature. Our approach has proven effective in building diverse teams focused on addressing partner challenges. We offer quality work-integrated learning experiences through our established internship program. Our strong community and industry partnerships, coupled with talented, diverse research teams, and over $2.5M in specialized equipment, uniquely positions Selkirk Innovates to advance rural resilience in the Kootenay Development Region of BC. Over the next five years, our students, faculty and partner teams will apply technology solutions and social innovation approaches to address our most pressing challenges.
