Three-dimensional (3D) printing, also known as additive manufacturing (AM), is a powerful manufacturing technique with a 2020 global market size of ca. $13.8B USD, projected to grow by 21% annually through to 2028. 3D printing is of special importance to Canada in the fourth industrial revolution - Industry 4.0 - given the dominant share of Canada's gross domestic product (GDP) occupied by the manufacturing industry and the pressing need to diversify Canada's economy well beyond resource-based industries. Canada has seen a booming 3D printing industry from coast to coast. However, a massive gap in highly qualified personnel (HQP) with knowledge and experience in 3D printing is looming, and there is a growing need for HQP in this sector. Canada must act quickly to fill this gap, or risk being left behind.3DPTM: NSERC CREATE Training Program in 3D Printing Technology and Materials is a new, innovative training initiative at UBC and UVic that will train a future generation of scientists and engineers in 3D printing to provide the needed HQP to meet the increasing regional and national demand for HQP in 3D printing. Trainees will undertake interdisciplinary, collaborative research projects covering the full spectrum of 3D printing, from technology and ink development to applications of 3D printing technology, with a special focus on biomedical applications. They will take innovative new coursework and participate in a new dedicated seminar program and professional development activities. 3DPTM trainees will closely interact with industry through an industry mentorship program, through seminars and retreats, and through internships at Canadian companies or in Asia. Trainees will obtain hands-on training on instruments relevant for 3D printing, develop soft skills through professional development workshops and outreach activities, and build industry connections to facilitate their transition to the workforce. These HQP will help meet the increasing need for Canadian industry and innovation.
