The proposed research will re-evaluate seismic design provisions for foundations of steel braced frames with the goal to minimize the costs while promoting a safe and resilient seismic performance of this popular seismic-resistant system. The Canadian Institute of Steel Construction (CISC), one of the partners for this proposal, recognized the crucial importance of this topic by awarding this project not only financial support in the 2021 CISC research grant competition, but also the prestigious HA Krentz Award, given annually for the grant that is ranked highest in terms of potential benefits to the Canadian steel construction industry. This partnership will be complemented through collaboration with engineers from Bush, Bohlman & Partners, who will bring to the project their extensive experience in seismic design of steel structures. Combining the knowledge about industry needs and the design experience of industrial partners with the research expertise of Drs. Koboevic and Wiebe will create the winning conditions to point the way toward more efficient and resilient seismic design of foundations for steel braced frames.
