This project aims to develop novel modular steel systems with an emphasis on seismic performance and resilience, which can be used in Canada. Traditional modular systems have used steel or reinforced concrete core walls with steel tie bars to provide adequate seismic performance. However, this method may cause additional costs and logistical issues when constructing a separate lateral force resisting system (such as concrete core walls). In this project, various alternatives will be explored and developed to accelerate the process, while providing a high level of performance. Lastly, the proposed modular systems will help Canada in providing quick, sustainable, resilient, and affordable housing to address the housing crisis and reduce the carbon emissions for the high-rise construction sector. This provides significant improvements in construction speed and reduces the need for skilled steel construction workers on site. At the construction site, semi-skilled workers can be used for component assembly, as most of the fabrication has already been completed at the factory.
