The concept of smart city is generally used to refer to a city that involves systemically the Information and communication technologies (ICT) to improve the quality of services provided to stakeholders or to reduce operating costs. In this context, stakeholders designate citizens as well as companies and institutions. The needs to be met are of various kinds: social, economic and environmental. Among the objectives, smart cities aim at reducing the cost of administration and operations, promoting economic development, providing appropriate services, capturing and tracking data in real time to generate new revenues for the municipality. The main objective of this research project is to design an innovative and open architecture/platform for supporting smart-X environments such as smart home, smart building, smart mobility and transport, smart infrastructure, with a focus on smart city. This platform should facilitate the development, integration and implementation of smart-X applications dedicated to the management of various cyber-physical elements. The long-term objective is to design and prototype an efficient and dynamic control platform for ensuring a scalable and real-time interoperability between different heterogeneous networking technologies for the development and the deployment of smart environments and smart cities. The originality of this project relies on the fact that it advocates for a rich and smart environment system that provides one-size-fits-all solution which spans the whole spectrum of smart environments applications and that is based on solid communication building blocks capable of ensuring scalable, efficient, reliable and real-time cross layer interoperability between different heterogeneous network architectures for particular infrastructure pattern predictions and for particular application scenarios. In terms of benefits for Canada, this project will provide innovative, conceptual and city-wide platforms for technology-human infrastructure integration in order to revolutionize every area of the citizens' life by tackling urban challenges such as citizen engagement, manufacturing efficiency, economic development and environmental sustainability.
